HP’s WebOS Could Be a Tough Competitor for Windows 8

Shortly after Microsoft has announced its plans to release Windows 8 which is its latest version of the Windows OS, it faces the prospect of a renewed competition from another OS – the Hewlett-Packard’s webOS, which is also planned to be released in 2012.

As suggested by HP CEO Léo Apotheker, the newly-inherited webOS platform which has so far been unique to homegrown devices may soon be made available to select third-party hardware partners. Previous reports by the company indicate that it intends to run the webOS alongside Windows in a dual-boot configuration.
HP also intends to extend the use of the new OS to tablets, laptops and desktops. As of now, the company plans to release its TouchPad tablet featuring a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and integration with webOS smartphones.
HP revealed that webOS will now include in-app purchase capabilities, which enables the consumers to purchase premium features and other related content while also giving the developers greater flexibility to monetize their software.
The OS will run head-on into Windows 8 if its devices start shipping in 2012 and is supposed to set the stage for a conflict between the two giants.
