Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – The iPad Killer?

Ever since Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPad in early 2010, the world of tablet computers is a hot one. All major manufacturers have jumped into the business, but none of them have managed to amass the popularity of Apple’s slab.

The latest contestant to enter the ring is Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. As the name implies, the device features a huge 10.1-inch Gorilla Glass display, offering 16M-colour at an amazing WXGA resolution. The tablet runs on Android 3.1 Honeycomb OS, with a healthy coating of TouchWiz UX user interface. Running on a dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 processer and 1 GB RAM beating at its heart, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is primed to take on the Apple heavyweight. With a standard 3.5 mm jack, Flash 10.3 support, a 3.2 megapixel camera at the rear and a 2 megapixel one at the front, the Tab has all the right boxes ticked in the multimedia category.
But the most distinguishing feature of the device is the fact that it is the smallest tablet available in the world. At a meager 8.6mm, the ultra-lightweight Tab is thinner even than the iPad 2. This makes it the most portable of all slates on the market right now.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been released in late August and is available for prices starting at Rs 32,000 for the 16 GB model and up to Rs 42,000 for the 64 GB model.
Processor – Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9
RAM – 1 GB
Screen – 10.1″ 16M-colour with 800 x 1280 pixels resolution
Camera – 3.2MP rear with LED flash, 2MP front
Storage – 16 / 32 / 64 GB

BlackBerry Torch 9810 Finally Comes to India

In early August, Research in Motion released 4 brand new phones into the western markets. These phones have finally crossed the pond, and have come over to India. Of all the four new handsets, perhaps the most exciting one is the new BlackBerry Torch 9810. This phone is a direct upgrade to the Torch 9800 that was released last year.

While the 9800 was generally well received, it received major flak from critics all over the world in one major area – lack of powerful hardware. RIM has thrown caution to the wind, and has upgraded the internals on the 9810 with the latest bells and whistles. A 1.2 GHz processor now powers the device to a new echelon, while 768 MB of RAM gives the device enough juice for flawless multitasking. For the picture taking and video recording aficionados, the phone features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and HD video recording capabilities. Shockingly, though, it lacks a camera at the front.
Another novelty with the Torch 9810 is the all new BlackBerry 7 OS. While last year’s OS 6 was a huge leap from its previous iterations, OS 7 simply builds on the great work done by its predecessor. The user experience seems to be smoother overall, while maintaining the classic BlackBerry feel to it.
The device has been made available to the Indian markets last week, and can be yours for Rs 29,990.
Processor – 1.2 GHz
RAM – 768 MB
Screen – 3.2” with 480 x 600 pixels resolution
Camera – 5MP rear with LED flash
Storage – 8GB on-board, expandable up to 32 GB
Dimensions – 111 mm x 61.9 mm x 14.5 mm

iBall Announces a Tablet for the Masses – The iBall Slide

In the past couple of years, every major and minor player in the industry has come up with their own tablet computer. It was only a matter of time before Indian companies jumped onto the bandwagon too. After Reliance and Beetel recently announced their versions of budget tablets, yet another Indian company, iBall, has come up with the goods. Presenting the iBall Slide – the tablet of the masses.

Running on a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, the iBall Slide is a 7-inch slate offering a WVGA resolution. The device comes with 8 GB of built in storage, which is expandable up to 32 GB. Although there is no official word on the amount of RAM, 512 MB seems like the best guess, looking at all the other specs of the tablet.
A nice touch here is that the tablet runs on the latest version of Android – 2.3 Gingerbread. Also, a full sized HDMI port sits at the side of the slate, which is something of a rarity in the tablet world.
Surprisingly, the Slate only features a front-facing camera, which is meant for video chat. There is no dedicated camera for clicking pictures and recording videos.
The iBall Slide will cost you INR 13,995. The company is yet to make an official announcement of the launch date.
Processor – 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8
Operating System – Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Screen – 7″ capacitive touchscreen with WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution
Camera – 2.0 MP front
Storage – 8 GB built in; expandable up to 32 GB via MicroSD
Dimensions – 256.7 mm x 175.3 mm x 8.6 mm

Apple Wins Nationwide Ban Against Samsung Galaxy Tab in Germany

Apple won a sweet victory today in their global legal war with Samsung in Germany. The Dusseldorf Higher Regional Court upheld the ban on the sale of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany. The reason for this ban was infringement of a few key patent laws filed by Apple, the manufacturer of iPad, which is in direct competition with Samsung’s product.

Citing the Galaxy Tab’s “clear impression of similarity” to the iPad, Judge Johanna Brueckner-Hoffmann ruled in favour of Apple.“The court is of the opinion that Apple’s minimalistic design isn’t the only technical solution to make a tablet computer”, the judge added.
Earlier, a German court had awarded Apple an injunction victory against the shipment of Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the entire European region. The court, however, lifted the ban outside of Germany, as it fell out of its jurisdiction.
To add to Samsung’s woes, the ban was extended to the recently announced Galaxy Tab 7.7 as well. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is already prohibited in Australia, while a similar court appeal in Japan is pending hearing.
Samsung, meanwhile, is preparing to appeal the ruling in a higher court. “We are disappointed with this ruling and believe it severely limits consumer choice in Germany”, said a Samsung spokesperson.
